Nigeria is one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. Highflying in the process of urbanization, industrialization and modernization, it is faced with multiple challenges of quality health, societal safety and environmental degradation and pollution. Despite these challenges, the Nigerian workforce suffers from severe lack of awareness and practice of standard occupational health and safety.
In order to counter such situational factors a group of certified professionals have decided to join hands in making Nigerians workers safe and healthy within and outside the work environment. Hence, the KIHSE foundation is tasked to generate, formulate, develop and sustain a national level voluntary campaign in health, safety and environmental issues within and outside the workplace. It is a Non-Governmental Institute and Non-Profit Foundation aimed at protecting employees and their employers, the public, and the environment.
KIHSE Foundation is made up of volunteer professionals responsible for public safety, environmental protection and occupational health and safety at work. KIHSE Foundation expert trainers and friendly support team builds confidence in the individuals and companies we train and advice. A major program of KIHSE Foundation is HSE Research. Health, Safety and Environment Research is about finding out new knowledge that could lead to advances in quality health and safer environment. There are many types of research from studies in the scientific laboratory to those that are observed in the fields and through examination by researchers with different conditions or new methodologies. KIHSE Foundation HSE Research is mainly concerned with preventing disease and promoting good health as humans interact with the environment constantly. Environmental health aims at preventing or controlling diseases and injuries related to the interactions between people and their environment. Thus, creating healthy environments can be complex and relies on continual research towards better understanding of the effects of exposures to environmental hazards on people’s health.
Kivos Institute of Health, Safety and Environment (KIHSE) Foundation
The KIHSE Foundation stated as a drive for selfless service to humanity. Mr. Salem Kivos ADEBIYI, the founder had severally witnessed the ill-fates the workers of a small-scale recycling factory had to suffer in their work environment. The factory and its staffs whose names we have to retract for confidentiality reasons, had staffs who suffered several injuries during work and eventually the death of an employee by electrocution. The founder was moved by the accidents suffered by the factory workers and volunteered to enlighten and educate the factory workers on occupational health and safety. Being a certified HSE personnel, it was a call to duty. After the successful training of the factory staffs, recommendations were made for him to do likewise with other small-scale industries within Benin City, Edo State where the foundation now situates as its founding location. Primarily, the institute was solely funded and powered through the founder’s company (Kivos Research Limited) and personal finance.
Progressively the founder thus instituted The KIHSE Foundation to enlighten, educate and certify not only factory employees but the citizenry of the locality. The vision of the founder to make the institute a “one for all” center for occupational HSE enlightenment, general safety, public health advocacy and a fighter for environmental protection, sustainability and preservation, led to coming together of the founder and his close friends and associates into forming the Kivos Institute Health, Safety and Environment Foundation. Thus, the Kivos Institute for Health, Safety and Environment Foundation was founded as a non-governmental, non-profit organization setup by six (6) HSE certified young experts namely Mr. Salem Kivos ADEBIYI (Founder), Mr. Jude ENAIHO, Mr. Daniel Umoh DIANABASI, Mr. Lawrence UKPONAHIUNSI, Mr. Ufuoma IGHOYIVBI and Miss Cynthia GEORGE
